Great Companies: How was the journey so far?
Vikas Suri: The journey has been exciting with its highs & lows as we all face it in our lives; primarily coz’ of the various business environments we are all exposed to in India due to its socioeconomic & political conditions. We started as a small company way back on September 6th, 1996 & here we are now with a pan india footprint and as one of the leaders in the Hospitality Industry. We today have over 85% market share in the Cinema Industry and have possibly done every Cinema in the country from J&K to Kanyakumari in some or the other way viz. by either the virtue of popcorn & seasoning supplies or concession (popcorn) equipment supplies. We also have a strong presence in the Hospitality Industry in terms of planning & installing Commercial Kitchens with some top brand like Lemon Tree, Nandos and many other names. Great Companies: What are the strategies you adopt to stay ahead in the race?
Vikas Suri: Innovation, Innovation & Innovation along with perseverance is the only strategy we use to stay in the business. We try and get a new product / technology or at least educate our customers in some newer concepts every year in the business of HoReCa. This keeps our pull alive in their minds and we naturally become their top-of-the mind choice with them. Besides this, we have a large Experience Centre in Delhi where a lot of well-known companies and also start-up companies bring in their ingredients to try their hand on Equipment before they buy which builds their confidence in our brand from a long term perspective.
Great Companies: What are the struggles and challenges you face?
Vikas Suri: Firstly I wish I had more hours than 24 in a day to manage my business & family life despite using the best practices of time management life gets tough at times; Moreover, Time Sensitivity from customers perspective will be more appreciated. Unfortunately, just-in-time deliveries to our customers put a lot of pressure on our system thus making on time deliveries tough & unmanageable at times
Secondly, Price Sensitivity is another challenge we face. Good Technology & Quality range of products comes with a price however, india being a price sensitive markets we get stuck at times on this issue at times. Customers wants the best at no cost. This may be possible in FMCG products but not when it comes to Capital Goods. Thirdly, Regulatory issues. There are a lot of new policies which get introduced time to time which have become challenging when it comes to SME & MSME’s in terms of compliance n subsequently have put pressure in increasing our cost thus reducing margins. Also we are essentially an import based organisation, which comes with its own set of regulatory issues. I think we are heading back to Licence Raj. Lastly, in the current environment where every company is going through a massive stress the government has still not introduced any concrete packages for SME & MSMES’s and its been about 30-40 days now from the day COVID19 issues have started.
Ours is a Capital-intensive business with a big range of Equipments thus all this becomes a challenge in day to day lives of ours.
