Great Companies: How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
Shabbir Merchant : I was working with open source tools and technologies in Chicago, United States back in 2007. These technologies were very disruptive and I knew they would play a major role in helping the Enterprise World. Hence, I started a company purely focused on open source tools and technologies. Later, I got focused on the ERP and business applications market and focused on the open source product Odoo. We started to provide apps and services around Odoo. As time progressed we further expanded our offerings and provided ready to use business apps for Enterprises.

Shabbir Merchant : We provide digital transformations focused on automating various business processes of any business. Our offering is essentially a service around an Odoo Business app and we have created Micro products and apps specific to industry verticals such as Rental, Construction, eCommerce, Retail among others. We have productized our services for faster delivery.
We offer ready apps based on Odoo open source business suite of applications. Our apps include SaaS Infrastructure Deployment, Home Delivery, Integrations with CRMs and Accounting Systems, Vertical industry Specific apps for Dental, Hotel, Rental, Tours and other industries. We also offer apps for messaging such as Whatsapp for Customer service. Our apps help small and medium businesses get up to speed and automate their business processes quickly. Our business apps have been consistently selling on the Odoo App store and we are ranked No #6 globally in terms of overall sales, the projected sales in the next year is in the range of Quarter Million Dollars only from Business Apps. We have seen a growth of 100% in the last 6 months.

Shabbir Merchant : Every day is a new challenge in a growing company. When the company got started there was an issue of generating business and new projects. Later, it became an issue of building a reliable team. We faced challenges in every aspect of business such as Marketing, Sales, HR, Operations and Delivery, Finance and Competition. The struggles are always going to be there at different stages as we scale up.
Great Companies: How do you plan to grow in the future? What does 5 years down the line look like for Pragmatic Techsoft Pvt Ltd?
Shabbir Merchant : Next 5 years we are looking to expand 5x in terms of our revenues. We are looking at building and investing in new products thus creating new intellectual capital. We are currently scaling up our team and customer base very aggressively.
Great Companies: If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
Shabbir Merchant : Start with one niche in a growing new technology or a product to solve a problem. Trying to do too much at the start distributes the energy in multiple directions. I generally tell my team to be Consistent, Persistent and Pragmatic.
