Bal Gill - Director of Balfort Legal

Great Companies: Please tell me something about the business and how did you come up with such an idea?

Bal Gill: After working as a barrister intermediary for a company in central London I suddenly found myself being made redundant. I loved my job and was unsure what to do as a next step. While searching for a new role, I realised I had the knowledge and motivation to go it alone, so I took the risk and set up my own legal consultancy business. Everyone’s business means a lot to them but it goes a lot deeper for me as I grew up with uncertainty. This isn’t something I wanted other families or my own children to experience and that is how Balfort Legal came about. Having the desire and drive to assist and ensure others are protected now and for the future.

Great Companies: What are the various services and products provided by your company?

Bal Gill: Our Estate Planning services including Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney & Probate services. We are also working with another company to bring a new product on the market. This new product allows any client have access to private healthcare, estate planning, financial advice, conveyancing, family law and an online file cabinet to store documents. This also includes a 24-hour bereavement helpline.

Great Companies: Why should one choose you over others in this field?

Bal Gill: What makes Balfort Legal different and how the gap in the market is filled is because the consultants visit clients in the comfort of their home. They are not having to sit in offices when discussing personal information. Clients are also able to book appointments directly via the website with the consultant. Due to COVID-19 we are conducting telephone consultations and video calls.

Great Companies: What are the struggles and challenges you face?

Bal Gill: Like all start-up businesses, at first it's a challenging time to create company awareness and marketing effectively. You have to ensure your competitive within the industry as well as fulfil client expectations for repeat custom and recommendation. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and having to work remotely, we have implemented telephone consultations and video chats before the planned time to accommodate. This was a challenging time as we still had a duty to provide for our clients. We turned this over in 2 weeks though it wasn't something we had planned to do for another 6-9 months.

Great Companies: What do you think are the few main things which are most important for a successful business?

Bal Gill: Having a business plan, a strategy and ambition are key when starting a business. It helps you maintain business focus, defines your goals and the steps needed to achieve them. Marketing is the driving force for a business. With the use of social media and other marketing material, you must have a constant flow of leads that will keep you in the public eye. Revenue and creating sales is the key element to a business’s finance and success, but none of this is achievable without the hard work and dedication of the team within in company.
